FAQs

  • Acupuncture is based on ancient principles dating back thousands of years and looks at the whole person. The practitioner starts by gathering a full case history, takes your pulse and looks at your tongue. This helps the practitioner to identify patterns in your body that have become weak, stagnated or blocked and therefore causing pain or disease.

The practitioner will then create an individual treatment plan designed to bring you back into balance and restore your wellbeing using a carefully selected choice from over 360 acupuncture points on the body.

Fine, sterile, single use needles are inserted into these points to move the Qi (energy) helping you to feel ‘you’ again - restoring your natural energy. You may also notice that other niggling symptoms will also resolve as your main complaint starts to improve.

  • Acupuncture needles are fine needles and do not hurt, you may feel a tingling sensation or a dull ache but this is all very normal and is known as ‘deqi’. If you do feel discomfort your practitioner can adjust or remove the needle.

  • Acupuncture works cumulatively and people successfully seek acupuncture to relieve symptoms for the many conditions listed below. If you would like further information, The British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) have collated evidence based factsheets.

You can also visit the Cochrane Library on the success of Acupuncture.

    Acupuncture can relieve symptoms of:

Acne - Allergic Rhinitus - Anxiety - Angina and Heart Disease - Asthma Back Pain - Bell’s Palsy Cold & Flu - Chronic Fatigue Syndrome - Chronic pain - Dementia - Depression - Diabetes Type II & Gestational - Dizziness & Vertigo - Painful periods (Dysmenorrhea) - Pregnancy & Labour - Eczema & Psoriasis - Endometriosis - Facial pain - Fibromyalgia - Frozen Shoulder - Gout - Headaches - Hypertension- Infertility: Male & Female - Irritable Bowel Syndrome - Insomnia - Migraine - Menopausal symptoms - Nausea & Vomiting - Neck Pain - Musculoskeletal pain - Sciatica - Sinusitis - Stroke - Stress - Substance dependency - Urinary Incontinence

  • Moxa or Moxibustion comes from Chinese Mugwort leaves. The herb is formed into cone shapes and placed on acupuncture points on the body. It is then lit and gently smoulders, warming the area and moving the flow of Qi and Blood. Sometimes a practitioner may use a moxa stick or place moxa on a needle. It’s a beautifully warming and soothing therapy.

  • Cupping Therapy has been used for over 3000 years in Traditional Chinese Medicine. I use a mix of fire cups and suction cups on areas of the body that hold tension or are painful.  Often this is the back, shoulders and sometimes the back of your legs. The suction helps to release pressure and tension. It is a wonderfully nourishing treatment promoting a fresh flow of ‘qi’ (energy) and blood to the area. Improving your wellbeing and reducing pain and inflammation.

  • Please wear loose comfortable clothing. You will need to remove shoes, socks, tights and tight clothing for your acupuncture session. I will need to be able to access your lower legs and arms from the knee and elbow down. Depending on the treatment I may need to access your stomach or back. Your comfort is my priority and I am happy to discuss any concerns you may have.

I want you to gain the maximum benefit from the session and ask that phones are on silent.

Testimonials

  • " I came to Jo back in January with chronic, debilitating headaches, and fertility support after trying for 5 months, with no success, after 8 years on the contraceptive pill (No bleeds). My cycles, although regular, were not ‘right’ and I struggled with daily headaches, which at times prevented me from working. After three treatments with Jo, I was pretty much headache free! Jo then focussed on improving my menstrual cycle, to which she did absolute wonders! I noticed changes each month. My last 3 cycles were so much healthier than this time a year ago, or even six months ago! And now, a full year after starting my TTC (trying to conceive) journey, I am around 6 weeks pregnant! And Jo is continuing to support me through each stage of my pregnancy. Thank you so much Jo “

  • "Jo is an extraordinary human being. Taking time to question and research you and your symptoms, makes one feel heard. Offering advice, tempered with reality has been refreshing. Finding relief and release from pain has been transformational. Jo has helped me initially with physical pain and relief, and as we progressed through that journey, she has been enormously helpful in giving me space and courage to come to other decisions. Don’t hesitate or continue to search, you won’t find anyone more interested and willing to find a pathway that is right for you, than Jo."

  • "I visited Jo for acupuncture as I’d read it was beneficial while having IVF. I had a consultation with Jo where she listened and understood my IVF treatment plan. From this she developed an acupuncture plan working alongside my treatment. Jo is extremely knowledgeable in terms of women’s health & IVF. Every session she took the time to understand how I was feeling, where I was in the process, asked for any medical updates and explained the acupuncture points for that session. She always had pages of notes and research she had done before our session. This really showed me how important and how much she cares about her clients. I was extremely lucky and fell pregnant with my first IVF cycle, and I really think that acupuncture & Jo’s knowledge played a massive part in my successful journey. Following on from this I have visited Jo for acupuncture during early pregnancy to help with morning sickness. I would highly recommend Jo for all your acupuncture needs, she is amazing at what she does. I actually miss our sessions together it was always so lovely, chatting with Jo, she is such a lovely lady."

  • "I've been seeing Jo after having my first baby and suffering with neck and back pain making feeding and rocking really challenging. Within just a couple of sessions I felt significantly better and started to really enjoy moments rocking my little babe, and I've been relaxing into feeds alot more and enjoying them. I always look forward to seeing Jo - she has a warm, friendly energy and we always have a good chat. I would highly recommend if you're looking for some great quality treatment and someone who can make you feel calm and at ease!"

  • "Joanne is amazing, she tailors every session to my individual needs which vary from week to week and is always investigating treatments even outside of our time together. This has been particularly supportive after I was diagnosed with breast cancer last year. I’m a believer in medical treatment and will explore complimentary treatments and their efficacy for me, If you’ve ever wondered if acupuncture could help you I highly recommend Joanne. She’s helped me with exhaustion, anxiety, sleep, pain, Sciatica, and complications from cancer treatments. It’s also important to mention Joanne is genuine, kind and compassionate creating a safe place in the treatment room. She also lives her beliefs and is generous in giving back in every way."

  • "Having worked outside most of my life and in a manual repetitive job, I have always suffered with both shoulder and back issues. Over the years I have spent a considerable sum on both Physio and Chiropractor sessions, of which some have been of great benefit. Acupuncture although pondered from time to time, like so many I was sceptical of the results continually questioning what benefits it could offer. After my initial visit to Joanne I remained sceptical, but unlike so many believed that one visit would not be sufficient to judge such a complex ancient treatment. A second visit the following week has changed my opinion forever, The shoulder pain I have suffered for so many years had cleared within 24hrs to the point I now cannot pinpoint where it actually was. A third visit has continued to ease other areas of pain within my neck and shoulders and therefore based on the continued positive results and Joannes extensive knowledge I am no longer a sceptic. Never judge anything without giving it a chance. Thank you Joanne "

  • " I have been having Acupuncture treatments by Joanne Lenny for a few months now and wow, she really is something special. I came to her after years of my women’s health needs being poorly managed, not listened too and not very well understood and wanting more for my health than just another pill to mask any underlying issue. Jo really got this and with her amazing know of the female body and her gentle yet empowering approach in practice, she has made me feel like me again but an ever better version and has given me an energy that I hadn’t had in a long time. Throughout my many sessions of Acupuncture and being amazed by the work Jo does, she has inspired me to take my own interest into Chinese Medicine with the potential idea of studying it one day. So really to anyone who hasn’t had Acupuncture before I would highly recommend Jo and the unbelievable healing power of the Eastern medicinal way."

  • “I can’t recommend Jo Lenny for acupuncture highly enough. She helped me prepare for my second pregnancy with lots of skill, care and kindness. Her knowledge is amazing, and I felt in very safe hands. Her warmth made me feel incredibly comfortable talking about previous experiences which only helped her with my treatment plan. “
