Acupuncture and Women’s Health

This is an introductory blog to a series I am writing. I will be focusing on women’s health, highlighting how acupuncture can support you through every stage that we as women experience:

As an acupuncturist, I look at the whole picture. I gather a full case history and look at all of your symptoms individually. This is one of the fundamental differences on how a Five Element and Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner will support a woman through difficult life transitions; whereas Western medicine can be a one size fits all treatment.

I’m a huge advocate of Western medicine and often work alongside medications people are taking but the beauty of acupuncture is a practitioner looks at ‘you’ as a whole. We piece together the jigsaw of your life, all your experiences, illnesses, symptoms and emotions and we build a treatment plan that is totally unique to you.

Life cycles

A woman’s body is powerful. When our body is ready we begin to menstruate, if we are blessed we create new life, and later our body naturally ceases menstruation and we enter the menopause. It sounds simple doesn’t it? Yet we know that it isn’t that straight forward; Puberty can be a huge shock to our teenagers (and even younger) causing anxiety, acne and mood swings, many women experience excruciating pain during their periods and suffer with endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome, heavy periods, or flooding and some don’t have periods at all.

Some of us have difficulty conceiving and seek help via IVF, while others fall pregnant easily. Pregnancy itself, however conceived, can be a beautiful or deeply stressful experience. Later as we hit the peri-menopause and menopause our body changes again. So many changes as this amazing body of ours adapts and twists with mother nature.

However beautiful these moments are, it’s not lost on me or any acupuncturist how challenging these complex symptoms can be. The good news is you don’t need to suffer in silence. As we navigate through these life transitions acupuncture can support you and alleviate challenging symptoms.

How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture is based on ancient principles dating back thousands of years and looks at the whole person. The practitioner starts by gathering a full case history, takes your pulse and looks at your tongue. This helps the practitioner to identify patterns in your body that have become weak, stagnated or blocked and therefore causing pain or disease.

The practitioner will then create an individual treatment plan designed to bring you back into balance and restore your wellbeing using a carefully selected choice from over 360 acupuncture points on the body.

Fine, sterile, single use needles are inserted into these points to move the Qi (energy) helping you to feel ‘you’ again - restoring your natural energy. You may also notice that other niggling symptoms will also resolve as your main complaint starts to improve.
