Acupuncture & Endometriosis
One of the great advantages to being a member of the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) is they challenge policy on our behalf. Last week they issued a press release calling for NICE guidelines on endometriosis to recognise acupuncture as an effective treatment for this debilitating condition that affects 5 to 10 % of women of reproductive age.
Endometriosis is a condition where the endometrial tissue grows outside of the uterus causing chronic pain, inflammation and scar tissue. Endometrial lesions can form in the bladder, uterus, fallopian tube and the rectum. Living with chronic symptoms can lead to depression, fatigue, infertility, hypothyroidism, bladder and bowel issues.
Many women report having to take time off work, and a direct impact on the quality of their life; urgent bowel movements and urination can make it difficult to spend time away from home. Heavy periods, prolonged bleeding or irregular periods are all common complaints.
The road to diagnosis and medical treatment can be long, intrusive and distressing. Acupuncture is a safe, gentle therapy and can alleviate pain and reduce inflammation - thereby having a significant impact on other symptoms. Acupuncture can also support people with their mental health and wellbeing and therefore giving back peace of mind and a sense of relief.
Acupuncture can also regulate the menstrual cycle and reduce heavy periods and clotting. By looking at the whole picture and person, acupuncture has a successful reputation in supporting women’s health.
We do not need to continue to put up with messy menstrual cycles and other related symptoms.
